SILATHERM®: Increased Thermal Conductivity

The demand for new and innovative plastic materials and fillers continues to grow. With SILATHERM®, the Quarzwerke HPF The Mineral Engineers division offers new filler concepts that significantly improve the thermal conductivity of plastics and adhesives. The use of thermally conductive plastics offers several advantages.

In addition to the benefits of lightweight construction, the use of plastic allows for the quick and economical production of complex geometries through injection molding. In the automotive sector, for example, the number of E&E applications in terms of automation and connectivity is constantly increasing.

In many of these applications, heat generation and its effective dissipation pose a major challenge. An intelligent choice and combination of plastics and fillers can provide a technical and economical alternative to the use of metallic materials.

When high thermal conductivity is required in plastic compounds, the use of metal fibers or powders has the disadvantage of losing electrical insulation. Mineral fillers are insulators and therefore fulfill the requirement of electrical insulation.

Various Applications

The high thermal conductivity of various minerals normally cannot be maintained in the compound. With the SILATHERM® product family, it has been possible to achieve a significant increase in thermal conductivity in thermosets and thermoplastics.

Mechanical properties remain at a very good level. These high-performance fillers open up new economic opportunities for many applications where heat needs to be dissipated, for example:

  • Electricity and electronics

  • E-mobility

  • TIM material

  • Gap-fillers

  • Thermally conductive adhesives and pastes

  • Thermally conductive thermoplastic compounds

OPTIMAL USE

SILATHERM® is available in different fineness levels and with various surface treatments. Thanks to silanization, we can make the most of the filler’s enhancing properties in most cases. All products are also available in untreated form.
